Known for her award-winning watermedia paintings that record her impressions of the Maya women in Guatemala’s colorful marketplaces, Jan’s paintings are pictorial tapestries layering observations and imagination, design elements, abstract motifs, and personal symbols. A graduate of Syracuse University with an MFA, Jan works full time as a professional artist, teacher, and juror. As a signature member of the renowned American Watercolor Society, National Watercolor Society, Southern Watercolor Society, and others, she is one of only 129 non-Chinese watercolorists world-wide, whose paintings were juried into the prestigious Shenzhen International Watercolor Biennial Exhibition 2013-2014. Her work has been juried into numerous important national and international exhibitions including the American Watercolor Society 2013, 2012, 2011 (and their Travel Show). Jan was listed as one of the best of the Contemporary Watercolor Masters in the Watercolor Artist Magazine (Feb. 2013), her paintings were featured in an article in American Artist (Winter 2007), Guatemala’s La Cuadra selected her work for the magazine’s cover along with a feature article (March 2012), and several of her paintings were included in the book The Creative Edge, Exercises to Celebrate Your Creative Self.
